The Power of Prayer

I think I told you some time ago that I was done with professional football. This was when some of these million-dollar babies had decided to take a knee during the National Anthem. I quit watching around that time and lost all interest.

Things have changed. This past week, we have seen entire teams kneeling. They were not taking a knee to the National Anthem. They were taking a knee in prayer.

I know that many of you were watching the game last week when the Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals squared off. If you weren’t watching, I’m sure you’ve heard about it by now. Bills player, Damar Hamlin, went into cardiac arrest and was resuscitated on the field. His teammates and the members of the Bengals team surrounded him on the field and prayed while the medical personnel were tending to him.

If you’ve watched any football at all, you know that many times players have been injured and have caused play to stop. You’ve likely also seen many players being taken off the field. This was different.

Immediately when this young man fell, there seemed to be chaos on the field. Players were openly sobbing and looked as if they were in disbelief. We instinctively knew this was not a usual incident on the field.

I was certain Damar Hamlin was dead. There was so much anguish and grief on the field, I had no other explanation.

The reaction to this tragedy was amazing. The game became unimportant and the teams as well as the American people united in prayer for this young man. Heaven was swarmed with prayers from all over the world.

My husband was confident that Damar would recover. I was confident he was already gone. My husband explained that he believed that God would use this opportunity, with the world watching, to show us that prayer works and that all things are possible, through faith and prayer. I’m so glad my husband was right this time, and I was wrong.

Within a few days, Damar was breathing on his own and communicating with his family. That was followed up with a Facetime session with his teammates. After having his heart restarted twice, how can this be? There is no way to classify that as anything short of a miracle.

Damar Hamlin’s charity raised more than $8 million in just a few days. The charity was a toy drive for underprivileged youth in his community. His goal was $2,500. How’s that for surpassing all expectations.

This outpouring of love and support from people everywhere has certainly given me hope that all is not lost.

It’s so easy to feel hopeless and despondent over things happening in the world today. Somewhere along the way in this country, our Culture has taken a wrong turn.

Do you remember the old song by the Judd’s, “Grandpa, tell me bout the good ol’ days?” One line is “Did families really bow their heads and pray? Did daddies really never go away?”

Our families are being destroyed by the Culture wars taking place. Drugs are pouring in over our open southern border and taking the lives of 100,000 Americans every year.

Pornography is rampant and is destroying families and marriages. I read that a recent survey showed that 7 out of 10 men and 3 out of 10 women have viewed porn in the past 30 days. Sixty percent of all the world’s porn sites are hosted in the U.S. This is unbelievable to me.

Our children are losing their innocence much too soon. When I was in the early grades of elementary school, our Health class was certainly different than it is today. We were taught how to drag someone who is drowning, to safety and administer CPR. We learned how to treat someone, in an emergency, who had suffered from a venomous snake bite.

We were also taught the tenuous difference between boys and girls. Today our children are being taught that there is no difference and that they can decide. They are questioning who they are and if they are boys or girls. They are being taught about sexuality and transgenderism and some schools have “Drag Queens” reading stories.

Our children are being read stories and seeing illustrations, pure pornography, that have been shut down from being presented at school board meetings. They were deemed inappropriate for that setting. Huh? But OK for our kids?

America is on the wrong course. We have taken a wrong turn in our culture. The only thing to do when you take a wrong turn is to turn around and go back.

Is it possible to go back to Grandpa’s “good ol’ days?” Yes, we can. We’ve witnessed miracles before.
