Sunday Musings for March 2024

A U.S. House Democrat, running for the U.S. Senate in California, has called for a $50 an hour minimum wage. She was serious. Good grief will the crazy ideas never stop. Talk about a job killer. Why not $100 an hour? Why not $1,000? If we really want to help people, shouldn’t that be considered? Talk about a job killer. Say hello to your robot employees.

An article in New York magazine revealed that wealthy parents are shelling out $120,000 per year for children to receive “peer consulting”. This is supposed to help them gain admission to Ivy League Universities. I guess since the stink over buying admissions to these prestigious schools, they had to find another route.

Florida law prohibits educational institutions across the state from allotting money to support DEI, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion programs. Florida Commissioner of Education said they would not allow taxpayer money to fund, “DEI and radical indoctrination that promotes division in our society.” He further said that, “DEI is DOA in Florida.”

New York City is suing social media companies over youth mental health. The five primary targets are, Tik Tok, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and YouTube. This should be interesting.

A Harvard Professor said, “All Hell Broke Loose” when his study showed no racial bias in police shootings. He had to have armed security when he published his study showing that police are 23.8 percent less likely to shoot at blacks and 8.5 percent less likely to shoot at Hispanics than they were to shoot at whites.

The U.S. Navy’s STEM program for “Equity” prioritized students based on race. In an effort to increase minority participation in the fields of Science, Technology, Economics and Math, the Navy set aside placements for minority students. The program was portrayed as an opportunity for all students to break into the STEM field.

According to a report from Carolina Journal, North Carolina could soon be teaching future police officers about 68 terms for “gender identity and expression” as part of officer training. The change is proposed to the Justice Academy’s Basic Law Enforcement Training program and comes from the Department of Justice. We have a tremendous shortage in law enforcement, and this is just another obstacle in the recruitment process. Don’t our servants in blue have enough to worry about?

California is considering a bill for free tuition for black students. If approved by the Legislature, the bill will go before the voters on a referendum. It allows the Governor to bypass the state’s longstanding ban on racial preferences that was passed by voters in 1996 and reaffirmed in a 2020 referendum. California is the place where far out ideas start.

Grade inflation is deceiving Americans about the state of their schools. Grade inflation ballooned during the Covid pandemic and apparently is persisting. The NY Times reported that at Harvard and Yale, 79 percent of grades are As. A report out of North Carolina shows grade inflation is prominent in K-12. The report compared the student performance on NC “end of course” math exam with math course grades. Before Covid, “the percentage of students who earned an A or B, was the same as the proficiency rate (54%). By 2022, the proficiency rate had fallen 11 percentage points (43%) while the students earning an A or B fell by just 3%.

An illegal immigrant from Venezuela has been charged with the murder of a young nursing student in Georgia, Laken Riley. It’s the first murder on the Georgia campus in 30 years. The illegal immigrant was released into the interior of the US by Customs and Border Patrol because there was no space in the detention center to hold him. He was also charged with previous crimes and could have been deported. He was charged in NY with endangering a child and charged in Georgia with shoplifting. There will be many more stories like this one as an estimated 10 million illegals (remember this doesn’t include those that get by the overwhelmed border patrol) will have crossed into our county by the end of President Bidens term. I sure hope he doesn’t get 4 more years to continue the same failed “catch and release” policies. Stop the Insanity.
