Politics brings out the best and worst in people. That is one of the most important lessons I have learned in my years in politics, both as an unpaid activist and as a State Senator. I have also learned that many people sadly and secretly turn into their own worst enemy. Is that what is going on with the Biden family?
You know the story of the Rich Man and Lazarus. A rich man ignored a poor beggar named Lazarus at his gate. After both men die, Lazarus goes to heaven, while the rich man goes to hell. We all know that the rich man asks for a drop of water. Did you notice that he never asked to get out of Hell? Hell does not need chains. People put themselves there all the time.
One way to get a quick taste of Hell is to get a DUI. People tell me that it is embarrassing and expensive. Mugshots, large fines, and losing your license for a year. Did you know that the average person drives drunk 80 times before they are charged? After the first 79 times they must know that they are doing this a little too often. Why do they choose to go through Hell?
Big political scandals start the same way. There are usually years of rumors, warnings, and innuendo before a story gets into the press. How many illegal campaign contributions and gifts did Governor Mike Easley take before that 2006 plane ride? How many girlfriends do you think that Senator John Edwards had before people found out that he cheated on his pregnant wife with cancer? They weren’t just one-off mistakes. Both were smart guys, with lots of advisors, who knew that they were in the spotlight.
Self-sabotage also causes a lot of politicians to hurt their own cause. Remember Senator Harry Reid (D)? He was considered a genius at US Senate procedures. It surprised me when he invoked the “nuclear option” to stop the filibuster on judges in 2013. Any fool knew that the GOP would control the Senate at some point and that the shoe would be on the other foot… but for some reason, he took action that led directly to the fall of Roe v. Wade, and to the conservative court we have today. It was not just some bad miscalculation. Why did he do that?
That brings me to the Biden family.
Let’s start with Hunter Biden’s “laptop from Hell.” One of Hunter Biden’s old laptops exposed corrupt foreign business dealings with his father, along with lewd videos with prostitutes, and photos of him using crack. Where did the laptop come from? Not a slick Republican consultant, or a shady Russian hacker who wanted to steal the election. The laptop came from Hunter Biden. He left it at a random computer shop in Delaware the year before his father ran for President, in 2019, and he did not pick it up after many attempts to reach him. Hell does not need any chains. He purposely left that laptop there… and I wish more people were asking why he did it.
Barack Obama once said, “Do not underestimate Joe’s ability to [mess] something up.” I wonder if a lot of his “blunders” are not a cry for help.
Right now, Joe has an approval rating of 40% with a “good” economy. His advisors are telling him about the steady increase in emergency 401(k) withdrawals, credit card debt, and inflation. He also knows he won’t get re-elected in the middle of a recession. He also knows that more and more evidence of a foreign bribery scandal is coming out. Up until now, it was considered taboo for a President to use the Department of Justice to attack his political rivals, and like Harry Reid, Biden has spent enough time in Washington to know that the shoe will be on the other foot.
I can’t help but wonder if the person who wants to bring down Joe Biden is Joe Biden. Is he self-sabotaging?
